Gems can be imbued with magic and used as focuses for incantations. These are very

rare. An imbued gemstone will enhance casting abilities with which the school of magic it is imbued. 

Using a gemstone as a focus: -1 action to cast time for a spell in the same school of magic as the imbued gemstone.
