Momen are nomadic warriors whose tribes are divided into smaller clans. They can be found deep in the mountains, where they can use their powerful bodies to make weapons and tools. There are two primary tribes: the Hills Tribe and the Stone Tribe. They are bitter enemies, sworn to a blood feud, and have been battling for generations.
Standing over seven feet tall, Momen are extraordinarily muscular humanoids who appear as large as the mountains they call home. They have long, large, muscular arms with slightly shorter legs. While they can stand upright and walk on two legs, they can also gallop on all fours in great strides and at alarming speeds.
Adapting to the mountains they live in, Momen's skin has earthy tones, primarily greys, browns, and even green tints. Their hair, usually black, can be seen with green, brown, grey, and sometimes white undertones.
They have rock-hard callouses at the tips of their fingers and toes, which allow them to find finger holds on the sheerest rock faces.
Despite their appearance, Momen are intelligent and honorable creatures, praised for their courage and proud heritage. They live in small—to medium-sized clans and migrate up and down mountainsides. The War Chiefs are the battle-hardened generals of the clan, but in times of deliberation, they are referred to as the Elders. The Elders make decisions that impact the clan by vote. In a stalemate, the Shaman is called upon to break the tie. The Shaman is the official leader and healer of the clan. While the Elders make most decisions, the Shaman’s voice carries weight, and defying them bears great consequences.
Warriors and Whelps make up the bulk of the clan. Everyone in the clan begins as a Whelp and, if they survive, becomes a Warrior once they complete certain rites of passage and gain experience. Warriors may challenge War Chiefs to combat to take their place. This often leaves the challenger dead or nearly dead.
Clans often combine to increase their size and strength. This is typically done in one of two ways: first, marriage. A high-ranking War Chief will marry off one of their children to a War Chief of a stronger clan to allow the first clan to be assimilated, effectively erasing the existence of the original clan. The second way is trial by combat. One War Chief may challenge a War Chief of another clan. The winner may assimilate the losing clan, leave them as they are, or destroy them.
Momen value good hygiene as they are sensitive to smells. They pride themselves on their clean appearance. During their Whelp years, they take the jawbone of the first creature they kill and use it to fashion a Strigil, a tool used for scraping gore off their skin. They keep this with them for the remainder of their lives, and taking one from a defeated foe is a right of passage.
Momen are proud warriors and are confident in their abilities. Seeing other races as weak and not worth their effort, Momen will avoid them unless they are forced to defend themselves or see some benefit in attacking.
Medium - Giant (range)
Each Momen character begins with +1 to Strength. Momen also do not take penalties to movement speed when climbing vertical surfaces.
The Chosen Trait for a Momen is a selection made at the time the character is created. Momen live in harsh conditions, but some are more harsh than others.
The kind of terrain that the Momen character survived in during the backstory period before the adventure will determine the additional chosen ability. A player may choose from the following options:
Hills Tribe
Hills Tribes are packs of Momen whom grew up with lush environments, and struggled much less for sustenance. These packs have more time to build other aspects of their day-to-day lives, including cultivating unique cultural aspects such as religion, historical archives, and other stories passed down through written or spoken word. As such, Momen from Hill Tribes gain a +1 to Memory to carry on their traditions for the next generation.
Stone Tribe
Stone Tribes are hardened even further by their environment as consistent food and supplies are hard to come by outside of trade. Due to this harsh lifestyle, Momen from Stone Tribes gain a +1 to Survival.
A Momen character’s Movement Speed is standardly 15 ft. per action.
When determining the starting HP of a Momen character, the rolled amount will always be added to 10 Base Hit Points.
A Momen character’s Recovery Points is standardly +2 HP.
The default value for a Momen character’s Menace score is 2. Menace rules for equipment still apply.
