One of the fundamental aspects of playing a SURGE! adventure is rolling against a set of abilities to see whether players succeed or fail attempted actions. In the SURGE! game framework these are called Attributes and Skills. Attributes set themselves apart due to the monumental impact they have on story progression and combat alike. Skills, however, are slightly more complex and allow for fine-tuning a character so that each feels unique and fresh. In addition, “Passives” statistics impact overall health, growth, and impediments.
At the beginning of an adventure, players set each of these values to 1. These values will be modified by the chosen Playable Species and as the GM progresses player characters’ Level.
In addition, each attribute's maximum level value is 20.

Strength is an important Attribute as rolls manage modifying Melee Attacks and Defending, Encumbrance, Athletics, Climbing Speed, Swimming Speed, Jumping, Grappling, Poison Resistance, and other athletic challenges as applicable.
Dexterity is the primary attribute that denotes speed and agility. Players will find that in SURGE!, Dexterity rolls are used in five distinct ways: determining the Number of Actions during Combat, Unarmed Strikes, acrobatic challenges, the ability to Dodge And Counter attacks, and Rapid Attacks.
Intelligence rolls in SURGE! encompasses much of how well a character can learn, perceive, make decisions, calculate, and cast magic.
Charisma is the attribute that rules over social interactions. This includes persuasion, intimidation, and insight.
At the discretion of the GM, Luck is used in any situation where a gamble is taking place. A gamble is not just betting money. It also accounts for any potential outcomes for the player or the party. Luck can determine several potential consequences or paths the story takes. Ultimately, how Luck is used is entirely up to the GM. For example, if the scenario’s progression is halted by a challenge, perhaps a player is chosen to roll luck to see if there are enemies patrolling nearby that may take notice.
